Internet Shutdowns Investor Briefing

Internet Shutdowns Investor Briefing

ShareAction will host a roundtable event at the PRI offices in London on 22 November, 15:00-17:00 for investors to develop their understanding of internet shutdowns and the associated risks posed to their portfolios.

ShareAction prepared this briefing on this issue in conjunction with Access Now, an organisation supporting the digital rights of global users at risk, to highlight the financial and reputational risks ICT companies and investors could face as a result of internet shutdowns. Importantly, the briefing provides three practical solutions in the form of governance recommendations that investors can promote with ICT companies.

It comes on the heels of an attempted coup d’état in Turkey in July. The media coverage focused heavily on the unavailability of social media platforms Facebook, Twitter and YouTube during the unrest. The shutdown in Turkey is not an isolated incident. Reported occurrences of internet and service shutdowns are on the rise -- with more than 40 recorded by Access Now in 2016 alone. However, global momentum against this trend has picked up significantly in the last year. This briefing further outlines the key legal, industry and corporate global developments that have occurred since we last published a briefing on this topic.

Significantly, the UN Human Rights Council approved a resolution in June 2016 that unequivocally condemns the use of internet shutdowns, demonstrating the growing international consensus against such measures. In addition to this, a group of major ICT companies, including Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, and Facebook, released a joint statement against internet shutdowns through the multi-stakeholder Global Network Initiative.
We have an exciting opportunity to build on this momentum and minimise exposure to associated risks through improved corporate governance practices.
The roundtable will use Chatham House rules to encourage open discussion. Participants include representatives from the Global Network Initiative and Ranking Digital Rights.
